Writing Poems from Nature
with Jeannine Atkins
We'll read a few poems that honor the natural world, then write a few of our own. The emphasis will be on using the senses to make your verse vivid. If you have pictures of favorite plants, trees, stones, or animals feel free to bring them as inspiration, but the only essentials are pen, paper, and a willingness to try some new words.
Jeannine Atkins writes about history for children and teens. Her most recent book is Borrowed Names: Poems about Laura Ingalls Wilder, Madam C. J. Walker, Marie Curie and their Daughters (Henry Holt). She teaches Children’s Literature in the English Department at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. You can learn more on her website at www.Jeannineatkins.com or read her blog, View from a Window Seat, at  http://jeannineatkins.livejournal.com
